What 4th grade students are like
Fourth graders are increasingly independent learners with growing metacognitive awareness. They can sustain focused attention for 30-40 minutes and can manage multi-day projects with guidance. They are developing a stronger sense of identity and may begin to compare themselves to peers academically. They respond well to choice, autonomy, and content that connects to their interests. Socially, they are navigating more complex group dynamics and developing a sense of justice and fairness.
Key milestones
- Multiply multi-digit numbers
- Add and subtract fractions with like denominators
- Write multi-paragraph essays with evidence
- Determine the meaning of unknown words using context clues
