4th Grade

Fourth grade represents a significant step up in academic complexity. Content becomes denser, texts become longer, and students are expected to work more independently. In ELA, fourth graders analyze character motivation, compare themes across texts, write multi-paragraph essays with clear organizational structures, and begin using evidence from texts to support their arguments. Vocabulary instruction shifts from sight word memorization to teaching students how to use context clues, word roots, and reference materials to determine meaning independently. Math extends to multi-digit multiplication and division, operations with fractions (adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators), decimal notation, and multi-step word problems. Students are expected to explain their mathematical reasoning, not just produce correct answers. Geometry instruction covers angles, lines, and symmetry, while measurement and data work includes unit conversions and line plots. Science in fourth grade dives deeper into energy transfer, waves, Earth's changing surface, and the internal and external structures of organisms. Social studies typically covers state history in depth, along with the regions of the United States, early American history, and an introduction to government structure at the state and federal level. Fourth graders are developing metacognitive skills -- they can think about their own thinking, identify when they are confused, and seek out strategies for understanding. They have strong opinions, enjoy debates, and respond to content that feels relevant to their lives.
