Social-Emotional Learning

Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) is the process through which students develop self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. The CASEL framework, widely adopted across K-8 schools, identifies these five core competencies as essential to both academic achievement and lifelong wellbeing. SEL instruction is not a standalone subject for most schools; instead, it is woven into the daily fabric of classroom life through morning meetings, conflict resolution protocols, community circles, and explicit lessons on empathy, perseverance, and self-regulation. Music is one of the most powerful tools for SEL because it accesses emotion directly. A song about managing frustration gives students language for feelings they may not yet know how to articulate. A jam about friendship models the social scripts of inclusion, compromise, and active listening. Singing together is itself a social-emotional activity -- it requires listening to others, matching tempo, and contributing to a shared experience. Research shows that group music-making increases oxytocin, reduces cortisol, and builds a sense of belonging in the classroom.
