The social-awareness strand is a core part of the K-8 social-emotional learning curriculum. It encompasses 30 vocabulary terms that students encounter as they progress from kindergarten through 8th grade. Each term builds on previous knowledge, creating a spiral of deepening understanding that prepares learners for increasingly complex concepts.
Understanding social-awareness vocabulary is essential for classroom discussions, assessments, and real-world application. Below you will find every term organized by grade level, so teachers and parents can quickly identify which words are appropriate for their students and explore definitions tailored to each developmental stage.
2nd Grade
(3 terms)
Compassion
Caring about someone who is suffering and wanting to do something to help them feel better.
Diversity
The many ways people are different from each other, including their backgrounds, cultures, abilities, and beliefs.
Gratitude
Feeling thankful for the good things in your life and showing appreciation to others.
3rd Grade
(4 terms)
Community service
Volunteering your time and effort to help your community without being paid.
Fairness
Treating everyone equally and making sure the rules apply the same way to everybody.
Inclusion
Making sure everyone feels welcome and is able to participate, even if they are different from the group.
Perspective
The way a person sees and understands a situation, which can be different from how someone else sees it.
4th Grade
(4 terms)
Cultural awareness
Understanding and respecting the traditions, beliefs, and practices of people from different backgrounds and cultures.
Generosity
Willingly sharing what you have with others, including your time, kindness, and resources.
Perspective-taking
Trying to understand how someone else thinks and feels by putting yourself in their position.
Stereotype
An unfair belief that all people in a certain group are the same, without considering individual differences.
5th Grade
(5 terms)
Belonging
The feeling of being accepted and valued as a member of a group, where you feel safe to be yourself.
Equity
Giving each person what they need to succeed, which may be different from giving everyone the same thing.
Privilege
Advantages that some people have because of their background, which they may not have earned or even be aware of.
Social norm
An unwritten rule that most people in a group or community follow about how to behave.
Tolerance
Accepting and respecting people who are different from you, even when you disagree with their views or lifestyle.
8th Grade
(4 terms)
Bystander effect
The tendency for people to be less likely to help someone in need when other people are present, assuming someone else will act.
Intersectionality
The way different parts of a person's identity, like race, gender, and class, combine to create unique experiences of advantage or disadvantage.
Microaggression
A subtle comment or action that communicates a negative message about someone's identity, often unintentionally.
Social justice
The fair distribution of opportunities, rights, and resources for all people, especially those who have been historically disadvantaged.
