What 3rd grade students are like
Third graders are moving from concrete to more abstract thinking. They can sustain attention for 25-30 minutes, follow multi-step directions independently, and begin to self-monitor their understanding. They are developing a stronger sense of fairness and can engage in perspective-taking. Socially, peer relationships become more important and friendship dynamics more complex. They are ready for increased academic rigor but still need scaffolding and encouragement.
Key milestones
- Read grade-level text fluently with comprehension
- Multiply and divide within 100
- Understand fractions as parts of a whole
- Write organized paragraphs with a topic sentence
- Use text features to locate information
