What 1st grade students are like
First graders are developing phonological decoding skills and beginning to read independently. They can sustain attention for 15-20 minutes and are starting to internalize classroom routines. They are highly social, enjoy cooperative activities, and respond well to praise and structured rewards. Fine motor skills are improving -- handwriting becomes more controlled -- and they are beginning to think in terms of cause and effect.
Key milestones
- Read grade-level text with purpose and understanding
- Add and subtract within 20 fluently
- Understand place value (tens and ones)
- Write simple narratives with a sequence of events
