1st Grade

First grade marks a major leap in academic expectations. Students transition from the exploratory, play-based environment of kindergarten to a more structured instructional day. Reading instruction intensifies as students move from decoding individual words to reading simple sentences and short texts with comprehension. They learn phonics patterns systematically, build sight word fluency, and begin reading independently for both information and enjoyment. In writing, first graders compose simple narratives, opinion pieces, and informational texts with a beginning, middle, and end. Math instruction in first grade focuses on addition and subtraction within 20, understanding place value (tens and ones), measuring lengths, telling time to the hour and half-hour, and organizing data into simple charts and graphs. Students move from counting-all strategies to more efficient counting-on and making-ten strategies, building the computational fluency that will serve them throughout elementary school. Science exploration in first grade includes studying sound and light, the needs of living organisms, and the relationship between the Earth, sun, and moon. Social studies expands from the family unit to the broader community, introducing concepts of maps, timelines, and civic responsibility.
