In 4th grade, students in the upper elementary (3-5) band encounter 90 essential math vocabulary terms. These words form the foundation for classroom discussions, reading comprehension, written assignments, and standardized assessments. Mastering this vocabulary gives students the language they need to express their understanding with clarity and confidence.

A math sentence that shows two expressions are equal using the equal sign. In 4 x n = 28, both sides equal 28.
Expression
A mathematical phrase with numbers and operation signs but no equal sign. 3 x (5 + 2) is an expression.
Pattern
A sequence of numbers or shapes that follows a rule. The pattern 3, 6, 9, 12 follows the rule 'add 3.'
Sequence
An ordered list of numbers that follows a pattern or rule, like 2, 4, 6, 8, 10.
Variable
A letter or symbol that stands for a number you do not know yet. In n + 5 = 12, the variable n stands for 7.

A number that uses a decimal point to show a value between two whole numbers. 3.5 is between 3 and 4.
Decimal fraction
A fraction with a denominator of 10 or 100, which can be written as a decimal. 3/10 = 0.3.
Decimal point
The dot in a decimal number that separates the whole number part from the fractional part.
Hundredths
The second place to the right of the decimal point. In 0.25, the 5 is in the hundredths place, meaning 25 out of 100.
Tenths
The first place to the right of the decimal point. In 0.3, the 3 is in the tenths place, meaning 3 out of 10 equal parts.

A common fraction used to estimate and compare, like 1/4, 1/2, and 3/4.
Common denominator
A shared denominator used when comparing or adding fractions. To add 1/3 and 1/4, use the common denominator 12.
Decompose
To break a number or fraction into smaller parts. You can decompose 3/4 into 1/4 + 1/4 + 1/4.
Denominator
The bottom number of a fraction that tells how many equal parts the whole has been divided into.
Equivalent fractions
Fractions that represent the same amount. 1/2, 2/4, and 3/6 all show the same part of a whole.
Fraction
A number that names part of a whole or part of a group. The top number (numerator) tells the parts you have; the bottom (denominator) tells total equal parts.
Improper fraction
A fraction where the numerator is bigger than the denominator, meaning it is more than one whole. 7/4 is improper.
Like denominators
Fractions that have the same bottom number. 2/5 and 4/5 have like denominators (both are fifths).
Mixed number
A number made up of a whole number and a fraction together. 2 and 3/4 is a mixed number.
Numerator
The top number of a fraction that tells how many equal parts are being counted.
Unit fraction
A fraction with a numerator of 1, like 1/2, 1/3, or 1/8. It names one equal part of a whole.
Unlike denominators
Fractions with different bottom numbers, like 1/3 and 1/4. You must find a common denominator before adding or subtracting them.

An angle that measures less than 90 degrees. It is narrower than the corner of a square.
Angle
A figure formed by two rays that share the same endpoint, called the vertex.
Classify
To sort shapes or objects into groups based on their properties, like number of sides, types of angles, or parallel sides.
Degree
The unit used to measure angles. A full turn around a circle is 360 degrees. A right angle is 90 degrees.
Equilateral triangle
A triangle where all three sides are the same length and all three angles are equal (60 degrees each).
Hexagon
A polygon with six sides and six angles.
Isosceles triangle
A triangle with at least two sides that are the same length.
Line
A straight path that goes on forever in both directions, with no endpoints.
Line of symmetry
A line that divides a shape into two halves that are mirror images of each other.
Line segment
A straight path between two points. Unlike a line, it has a definite start and end.
Obtuse angle
An angle that measures more than 90 degrees but less than 180 degrees. It is wider than a square corner.
Octagon
A polygon with eight sides and eight angles, like a stop sign.
Parallel lines
Lines in the same flat surface that never cross, no matter how far they extend. They stay the same distance apart.
Parallelogram
A quadrilateral with two pairs of parallel sides. Opposite sides are equal in length.
Perpendicular lines
Two lines that cross each other to form a right angle (90 degrees), like a plus sign.
Point
An exact location in space, shown as a dot. A point has no size — only position.
Polygon
A closed flat shape with straight sides. Triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, and hexagons are all polygons.
Protractor
A tool shaped like a half-circle used to measure and draw angles in degrees.
Quadrilateral
A polygon with exactly four sides and four angles.
Ray
A part of a line that has one endpoint and goes on forever in one direction, like a beam of light.
Rectangle
A quadrilateral with four right angles. Opposite sides are equal in length.
Regular polygon
A polygon where all sides are the same length and all angles are the same size.
Right angle
An angle that measures exactly 90 degrees, forming a perfect square corner.
Scalene triangle
A triangle where all three sides are different lengths and all three angles are different sizes.
Straight angle
An angle that measures exactly 180 degrees, forming a straight line.
Two-dimensional
A flat shape that has only length and width, with no thickness. Circles, triangles, and rectangles are 2D shapes.

The number of square units that cover the inside of a flat shape. A 5x3 rectangle has an area of 15 square units.
Conversion table
A chart that shows how to change from one unit of measurement to another, like feet to inches or kilograms to grams.
Formula
A math rule written with numbers, letters, and symbols. The formula for area of a rectangle is A = l x w.
Kilometer
A unit of length in the metric system. 1 kilometer equals 1,000 meters — about the distance you walk in 12 minutes.
Mile
A unit of length in the customary system. 1 mile equals 5,280 feet — about 4 times around a school running track.
Perimeter
The total distance around the outside of a shape, found by adding all the side lengths together.

A way to compare by asking how much more or how much less one amount is than another. If you have 5 more than me, that is an additive comparison.
Area model
A rectangle drawing used to model multiplication, where the length and width represent factors and the inside area represents the product.
Composite number
A whole number greater than 1 that has more than two factors. 12 is composite because 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 12 all divide into it.
Dividend
The number being divided. In 36 / 9 = 4, the dividend is 36.
Divisor
The number you divide by. In 36 / 9 = 4, the divisor is 9.
Estimate
An answer close to the exact answer, found by rounding or using mental math. An estimate for 298 x 4 is about 1,200.
Factor
A whole number that divides evenly into another number. The factors of 12 are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 12.
Factor pair
Two numbers that multiply together to make a given product. 3 and 4 are a factor pair of 12.
Inverse operations
Operations that undo each other. Addition and subtraction are inverse operations. Multiplication and division are inverse operations.
Multiple
The product you get when you multiply a number by any whole number. Multiples of 5 are 5, 10, 15, 20, and so on.
Multiplicative comparison
A way to compare by saying one amount is a certain number of times as much as another. '3 times as many' is a multiplicative comparison.
Partial product
A product found by multiplying part of a number. When multiplying 23 x 4, the partial products are 20x4=80 and 3x4=12.
Prime number
A whole number greater than 1 that has exactly two factors: 1 and itself. 2, 3, 5, 7, and 11 are prime numbers.
Product
The answer to a multiplication problem. The product of 8 and 6 is 48.
Quotient
The answer to a division problem. The quotient of 36 divided by 9 is 4.
Remainder
The amount left over when one number does not divide evenly into another. 25 / 7 = 3 remainder 4.
Standard algorithm
The traditional step-by-step method taught in school for adding, subtracting, multiplying, or dividing multi-digit numbers.

A number with two or more digits, like 47, 385, or 1,024.
Place value
The value of a digit based on its position. In 45,678, the 4 is worth 40,000 because it is in the ten-thousands place.
Rounding
Changing a number to the nearest ten, hundred, thousand, or other place value to make it simpler. 3,472 rounds to 3,500.
Whole number
A number without fractions or decimals: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, and so on.
General math terms
Comparison
Looking at two numbers to find which is greater, less, or equal.
Decompose fractions
Breaking a fraction into a sum of smaller fractions. 3/4 = 1/4 + 1/4 + 1/4.
Factors
Numbers that multiply together to make another number. 3 and 4 are factors of 12.
Fraction on a number line
A fraction shown as a point on a number line between whole numbers.
Input-output table
A table that shows a rule changing input numbers into output numbers.
Intersecting lines
Lines that cross each other at any angle.
Long division
A step-by-step method for dividing large numbers using divide, multiply, subtract, bring down.
Multi-digit
A number that has two or more digits, like 48 or 376.
Multiples
Numbers you get when you multiply a number by 1, 2, 3, and so on. Multiples of 5 are 5, 10, 15, 20.
Partial products
Pieces of a multiplication answer that you add together to get the final product.
Pattern rule
A description of how a number pattern works, like add 3 each time.
Place value periods
Groups of three digits in large numbers separated by commas: ones, thousands, millions.
Simplest form
A fraction reduced so the numerator and denominator share no common factor except 1.
Word problem
A math question written as a story that you solve with numbers.
