The measurement strand is a core part of the K-8 math curriculum. It encompasses 46 vocabulary terms that students encounter as they progress from kindergarten through 8th grade. Each term builds on previous knowledge, creating a spiral of deepening understanding that prepares learners for increasingly complex concepts.
Understanding measurement vocabulary is essential for classroom discussions, assessments, and real-world application. Below you will find every term organized by grade level, so teachers and parents can quickly identify which words are appropriate for their students and explore definitions tailored to each developmental stage.
2nd Grade

Centimeter
A small unit for measuring length. Smaller than an inch.
Foot
A unit of length. 1 foot equals 12 inches.
Inch
A small unit for measuring length. About the width of a quarter.
Measure
To find out how long, tall, or heavy something is.
Meter
A unit of length. 1 meter equals 100 centimeters.
Ruler
A tool for measuring how long something is.
Temperature
How hot or cold something is.
Unit
One single thing used for measuring.
3rd Grade

Area
The amount of space inside a flat shape, measured in square units. A rectangle 3 units by 4 units has an area of 12 square units.
Centimeter
A small unit of length in the metric system. Your pinky fingernail is about 1 centimeter wide.
Elapsed time
The amount of time that passes between a start time and an end time.
Foot
A unit of length in the customary system. 1 foot equals 12 inches — about the length of a school ruler.
Gram
A small unit for measuring how heavy something is in the metric system. A paperclip weighs about 1 gram.
Inch
A small unit of length in the customary system. A quarter coin is about 1 inch across.
Kilogram
A unit for measuring mass in the metric system. 1 kilogram equals 1,000 grams. A textbook weighs about 1 kilogram.
Liter
A unit for measuring liquid in the metric system. A large water bottle holds about 1 liter.
Mass
The amount of matter in an object, measured in grams or kilograms.
Meter
A unit of length in the metric system. 1 meter equals 100 centimeters — about the width of a doorway.
Perimeter
The total distance around the outside edge of a shape. To find the perimeter, add up the lengths of all the sides.
Square unit
A square with sides that are each 1 unit long, used to measure area.
Tiling
Covering a flat surface completely with shapes that have no gaps or overlaps, used to find area.
Yard
A unit of length in the customary system. 1 yard equals 3 feet — about the length of a baseball bat.
4th Grade
(6 terms)Area
The number of square units that cover the inside of a flat shape. A 5x3 rectangle has an area of 15 square units.
Conversion table
A chart that shows how to change from one unit of measurement to another, like feet to inches or kilograms to grams.
Formula
A math rule written with numbers, letters, and symbols. The formula for area of a rectangle is A = l x w.
Kilometer
A unit of length in the metric system. 1 kilometer equals 1,000 meters — about the distance you walk in 12 minutes.
Mile
A unit of length in the customary system. 1 mile equals 5,280 feet — about 4 times around a school running track.
Perimeter
The total distance around the outside of a shape, found by adding all the side lengths together.
5th Grade

Cubic unit
A small cube with edges that are each 1 unit long, used to measure volume.
Customary system
The measurement system used in the United States, with inches, feet, miles for length; cups, pints, gallons for capacity; and ounces, pounds for weight.
Formula
A mathematical rule expressed with symbols. The formula for volume of a rectangular prism is V = l x w x h.
Gallon
A large unit of liquid measurement in the customary system. 1 gallon equals 4 quarts. A big milk jug holds 1 gallon.
Kilogram
A unit of mass in the metric system. 1 kilogram equals 1,000 grams — about as heavy as a pineapple.
Kilometer
A unit of length in the metric system. 1 kilometer equals 1,000 meters — about four times around a school track.
Metric system
A system of measurement based on multiples of 10 that uses meters for length, liters for capacity, and grams for mass.
Milligram
A very tiny unit of mass in the metric system. 1,000 milligrams equals 1 gram. A grain of sand weighs about 1 milligram.
Milliliter
A very small unit for measuring liquid in the metric system. 1,000 milliliters equals 1 liter. An eyedropper holds about 1 milliliter.
Millimeter
A very small unit of length in the metric system. 10 millimeters equals 1 centimeter. The thickness of a dime is about 1 millimeter.
Ounce
A small unit of weight in the customary system. 16 ounces equals 1 pound. A slice of bread weighs about 1 ounce.
Pound
A unit of weight in the customary system. 1 pound equals 16 ounces. A loaf of bread weighs about 1 pound.
Quart
A unit of liquid measurement in the customary system. 1 quart equals 2 pints or 4 cups.
Surface area
The total area of all the faces of a 3D shape. To find it, calculate the area of each face and add them together.
Ton
A very large unit of weight in the customary system. 1 ton equals 2,000 pounds — about as heavy as a small car.
Unit cube
A cube with sides that are each exactly 1 unit long. Unit cubes are used to measure volume.
Volume
The amount of space inside a 3D shape, measured in cubic units. A box 3 units long, 2 wide, and 4 tall has a volume of 24 cubic units.
