The operations strand is a core part of the K-8 math curriculum. It encompasses 58 vocabulary terms that students encounter as they progress from kindergarten through 8th grade. Each term builds on previous knowledge, creating a spiral of deepening understanding that prepares learners for increasingly complex concepts.
Understanding operations vocabulary is essential for classroom discussions, assessments, and real-world application. Below you will find every term organized by grade level, so teachers and parents can quickly identify which words are appropriate for their students and explore definitions tailored to each developmental stage.

Addition
Putting numbers together to find how many in all.
Commutative property
You can add numbers in any order and get the same answer.
Count back
Subtracting by counting down from a number.
Count on
Adding by counting up from a number.
Difference
The answer when you subtract one number from another.
Doubles
Adding a number to itself. Like 4 + 4.
Equal sign
The sign = that means the same as.
Equation
A math sentence with an equal sign. Like 3 + 2 = 5.
Fact family
A set of addition and subtraction facts that use the same numbers.
Making ten
Finding two numbers that add up to 10.
Missing addend
The unknown number in an addition problem. Like 3 + ? = 7.
Number bond
A picture that shows how a number breaks into two parts.
Subtraction
Taking a number away from another number.
Sum
The answer when you add numbers together.

Column
A line of things going up and down.
Equal groups
Groups that each have the same number of things.
Estimate
A smart guess that is close to the real answer.
Mental math
Solving a math problem in your head without paper.
Number sentence
A math statement using numbers and symbols. Like 5 + 3 = 8.
Regroup
Trading 10 ones for 1 ten, or 10 tens for 1 hundred, when adding or subtracting.
Repeated addition
Adding the same number over and over. Like 3 + 3 + 3 + 3.
Row
A line of things going across, left to right.
3rd Grade
(21 terms)Addend
A number being added to another number. In 3 + 5 = 8, both 3 and 5 are addends.
Algorithm
A set of step-by-step instructions for solving a math problem. Stacking numbers to add is an algorithm.
Array
Objects arranged in equal rows and columns. An array with 3 rows of 4 shows 3 x 4 = 12.
Associative property
A rule that says when you add or multiply three or more numbers, how you group them does not change the answer.
Commutative property
A rule that says you can add or multiply numbers in any order and get the same answer. 3 + 5 = 5 + 3.
Compare
To decide if one number is greater than, less than, or equal to another number using the symbols >, <, or =.
Difference
The answer you get when you subtract one number from another. The difference of 9 - 4 is 5.
Distributive property
A rule that lets you break apart a multiplication problem to make it easier. 3 x 7 = 3 x 5 + 3 x 2.
Divide
To split a number into equal groups. 12 divided by 3 means splitting 12 into 3 equal groups of 4.
Dividend
The number being divided in a division problem. In 12 / 3 = 4, the number 12 is the dividend.
Divisor
The number you divide by. In 12 / 3 = 4, the number 3 is the divisor.
Equal groups
Groups that have the same number of items in each one. 3 bags with 5 apples each are equal groups.
Estimate
A close guess about an amount or answer, often made by rounding numbers first.
Fact family
A set of related math facts using the same three numbers. 3, 4, 12 gives: 3x4=12, 4x3=12, 12/3=4, 12/4=3.
Factor
A number that you multiply with another number to get a product. In 3 x 4 = 12, both 3 and 4 are factors.
Multiply
To add a number to itself a certain number of times. 4 x 3 means adding four 3 times: 4 + 4 + 4 = 12.
Number line
A straight line with numbers placed at equal distances along it, used to show the order and position of numbers.
Product
The answer you get when you multiply two numbers. The product of 3 x 4 is 12.
Quotient
The answer you get when you divide one number by another. When you divide 12 by 3, the quotient is 4.
Remainder
The amount left over when a number cannot be divided evenly. 13 / 4 = 3 with a remainder of 1.
Sum
The answer you get when you add numbers together. The sum of 4 + 6 is 10.
4th Grade

A way to compare by asking how much more or how much less one amount is than another. If you have 5 more than me, that is an additive comparison.
Area model
A rectangle drawing used to model multiplication, where the length and width represent factors and the inside area represents the product.
Composite number
A whole number greater than 1 that has more than two factors. 12 is composite because 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 12 all divide into it.
Dividend
The number being divided. In 36 / 9 = 4, the dividend is 36.
Divisor
The number you divide by. In 36 / 9 = 4, the divisor is 9.
Estimate
An answer close to the exact answer, found by rounding or using mental math. An estimate for 298 x 4 is about 1,200.
Factor
A whole number that divides evenly into another number. The factors of 12 are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 12.
Factor pair
Two numbers that multiply together to make a given product. 3 and 4 are a factor pair of 12.
Inverse operations
Operations that undo each other. Addition and subtraction are inverse operations. Multiplication and division are inverse operations.
Multiple
The product you get when you multiply a number by any whole number. Multiples of 5 are 5, 10, 15, 20, and so on.
Multiplicative comparison
A way to compare by saying one amount is a certain number of times as much as another. '3 times as many' is a multiplicative comparison.
Partial product
A product found by multiplying part of a number. When multiplying 23 x 4, the partial products are 20x4=80 and 3x4=12.
Prime number
A whole number greater than 1 that has exactly two factors: 1 and itself. 2, 3, 5, 7, and 11 are prime numbers.
Product
The answer to a multiplication problem. The product of 8 and 6 is 48.
Quotient
The answer to a division problem. The quotient of 36 divided by 9 is 4.
Remainder
The amount left over when one number does not divide evenly into another. 25 / 7 = 3 remainder 4.
Standard algorithm
The traditional step-by-step method taught in school for adding, subtracting, multiplying, or dividing multi-digit numbers.
5th Grade

The symbols { } used as a third level of grouping in complex expressions, outside brackets and parentheses.
Brackets
The symbols [ ] used to group numbers in an expression, usually around parentheses to show a second level of grouping.
Dividend
The number being divided in a division problem. In 56 / 8 = 7, the number 56 is the dividend.
Divisor
The number you divide by. In 56 / 8 = 7, the number 8 is the divisor.
Order of operations
A set of rules for the order in which to do calculations: parentheses first, then exponents, then multiplication and division, then addition and subtraction.
Parentheses
The symbols ( ) used to group parts of an expression and show what to calculate first.
Product
The result of multiplying two or more numbers together. The product of 6 and 7 is 42.
Quotient
The result of dividing one number by another. When you divide 45 by 9, the quotient is 5.
Remainder
The amount left over when a number does not divide evenly. 17 / 5 = 3 remainder 2.
