In 4th grade, students in the upper elementary (3-5) band encounter 35 essential social studies vocabulary terms. A change or addition made to the Constitution.
Bill of Rights
The first ten changes to the Constitution that protect the freedoms of all Americans.
Branches of government
The three parts of the U.S. government: the part that makes laws, the part that carries out laws, and the part that decides if laws are fair.
Civic duty
Actions that citizens are expected to do, like voting, serving on juries, and following laws.
Congress
The group of elected leaders who make laws for the United States, made up of the Senate and the House of Representatives.
Executive branch
The part of government led by the President that carries out and enforces the laws.
Judicial branch
The part of government made up of courts and judges that decides whether laws follow the Constitution.
Legislative branch
The part of government that makes the laws, known as Congress.

Export
Goods that are sent to another country to be sold.
Import
Goods that are brought into a country from another place to be sold.
Industry
All the businesses that make a particular type of product or provide a particular service.
Opportunity cost
What you give up when you choose one thing over another.
Profit
The money a business makes after paying for all its costs.

A deep, narrow valley with steep sides, often carved by a river over millions of years.
Conservation
The careful use and protection of natural resources to prevent waste and destruction.
Equator
An imaginary line around the middle of the Earth that divides it into the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.
Erosion
The gradual wearing away of land by water, wind, or ice.
Hemisphere
One half of the Earth, divided by the equator or the prime meridian.
Latitude
Imaginary lines that go across a map from east to west, measuring how far north or south a place is from the equator.
Longitude
Imaginary lines that go up and down on a map from the North Pole to the South Pole, measuring how far east or west a place is.
Natural disaster
A dangerous event caused by nature, such as a hurricane, earthquake, tornado, or flood.
Plateau
A large, flat area of land that is raised higher than the land around it.
Vegetation
All the plants that grow in a particular area.

Declaration
An important announcement or statement, especially one made by a government.
Frontier
The edge of settled land, beyond which is wilderness or unknown territory.
Independence
The freedom of a country to govern itself without being controlled by another nation.
Monument
A statue, building, or other structure created to honor a person or event from history.
Patriot
A person who loves and strongly supports their country, especially someone who fought for independence.
Pioneer
One of the first people to move to and settle in a new area.
Revolution
A big change, especially when people fight to create a new kind of government.
Technology
Tools, machines, and methods that people invent to solve problems and make work easier.
Treaty
An official agreement between two or more countries or groups.
