Citizen

Compromise
An agreement in which each side gives up something in order to reach a solution both can accept.
Consent of the governed
The idea that government gets its power from the people who agree to follow its rules.
Constitution
The supreme law of the United States that establishes the framework of government, defines citizens' rights, and limits government power.
Debate
A formal discussion in which people argue different sides of an issue using facts and reasoning.
Federalism
A system of government where power is shared between the national government and the state governments.
Petition
A written request signed by many people asking the government to take action on an issue.
Representation
Having someone speak or act on your behalf in government.
Republic
A form of government where citizens elect representatives to make decisions and laws on their behalf.

Capitalism
An economic system where individuals and businesses own property and decide what to produce and sell.
Currency
The money used in a particular country, like dollars in the United States.
Free enterprise
An economic system where businesses are free to operate with little government control.
Specialization
When a person, business, or region focuses on making one product or providing one service really well.
Tariff
A tax on goods brought into a country from another country.

Climate
The average weather conditions of a place measured over a long period of time, including temperature and rainfall.
Elevation
How high or low a place is compared to sea level.
Prime meridian
The imaginary line of longitude at zero degrees that divides the Earth into Eastern and Western Hemispheres.
Scale
A tool on a map that shows how distances on the map compare to real distances on Earth.
Territory
An area of land that belongs to or is controlled by a country but is not yet a state.
Topography
The shape and features of the land surface, including mountains, valleys, and rivers.
Tributary
A smaller river or stream that flows into a larger river.

Civil war

Civilization

Emancipation

Plantation
A large farm in the South where crops like cotton and tobacco were grown, often using the labor of enslaved people.
Reconstruction
The period after the Civil War when the United States worked to rebuild the South and bring the country back together.
Slavery
The practice of owning people as property and forcing them to work without pay or freedom.
Suffrage
The right to vote, especially the movement to give women the right to vote.
