Apostrophe
An apostrophe is a mark that shows a letter is missing (like don't) or that something belongs to someone (like Sara's book).
Collective noun
A collective noun is a word for a group of people, animals, or things, like 'team,' 'flock,' or 'bunch.'
Complete sentence
A complete sentence has a subject (who or what) and a predicate (what they do), and it tells a complete thought.
Contraction
A contraction is a shorter way to write two words by putting them together and using an apostrophe, like 'can't' for 'cannot.'
Irregular plural noun
An irregular plural noun does not follow the usual rule of adding -s. Instead, the word changes, like 'mouse' becomes 'mice.'
Irregular verb
An irregular verb does not follow the usual -ed rule for past tense. Instead, the word changes, like 'go' becomes 'went.'
Possessive noun
A possessive noun shows that something belongs to someone, like 'the dog's bone' or 'Maria's hat.'
Quotation
A quotation is the exact words someone said, placed inside quotation marks.
Reflexive pronoun
A reflexive pronoun refers back to the person doing the action, like 'myself,' 'yourself,' or 'themselves.'

Connection

Contrast
To contrast means to tell how two things are different.
Effect
An effect is what happens because of the cause. It is the result.
Expository text
Expository text explains or gives information about a topic using facts, examples, and definitions.
Fantasy
Fantasy is a genre with magical or impossible elements that could not happen in the real world, like dragons, wizards, or talking animals.
Genre
A genre is a type or category of writing, like fiction, poetry, or nonfiction.
Informational text
Informational text is writing that gives facts and information about a real topic.
Problem
The problem in a story is the challenge or trouble that the main character must deal with.
Question
A question is something you ask to find out more. Good readers ask questions before, during, and after reading.
Realistic fiction
Realistic fiction is a made-up story that could happen in real life, with characters and events that seem real.
Sequence
Sequence is the order in which events happen in a story: first, next, then, last.
Solution
The solution is how the problem in a story gets fixed or worked out.
Summary
A summary is a short retelling of the most important parts of a story or text.
Tall tale
A tall tale is a funny story with exaggerated characters and events, like Paul Bunyan and his giant blue ox.

A text-to-self connection is when something you read reminds you of your own life or experiences.
Text-to-text connection
A text-to-text connection is when something you read reminds you of another book or story you have read.
Text-to-world connection
A text-to-world connection is when something you read reminds you of something happening in the real world.
Visualize
To visualize means to make pictures in your mind while you read, imagining what the story looks and feels like.

Caption
A caption is a sentence or phrase under or next to a picture that explains what the picture shows.
Chart
A chart organizes information in rows and columns so it is easy to read and compare.
Map

Photograph
A photograph in a nonfiction book is a real picture taken with a camera that shows what something actually looks like.
