The vocabulary-skills strand is a core part of the K-8 english language arts curriculum. It encompasses 38 vocabulary terms that students encounter as they progress from kindergarten through 8th grade. Each term builds on previous knowledge, creating a spiral of deepening understanding that prepares learners for increasingly complex concepts.

Kindergarten

Sight word

Syllable

Word family

Compound word
A compound word is made by putting two smaller words together, like 'sun' + 'flower' = 'sunflower.'
Root word
A root word is the main part of a word before any prefix or suffix is added, like 'play' in 'replay' or 'playful.'
Synonym
A synonym is a word that means the same or almost the same as another word, like 'happy' and 'glad.'
3rd Grade
