7th Grade

Seventh grade deepens the academic rigor introduced in sixth grade and pushes students toward greater independence and critical thinking. In ELA, seventh graders analyze how authors use literary devices to create meaning, compare texts across genres and time periods, write narratives with complex plot structures, and develop sustained arguments with counterarguments. Vocabulary instruction emphasizes academic language that crosses content areas -- words like "analyze," "evaluate," "synthesize," and "infer" that students need to succeed in every class. Math instruction in seventh grade focuses on proportional relationships (including percentages, scale drawings, and similar figures), operations with rational numbers (fractions, decimals, and negative numbers), expressions and equations, and probability. This is the year when algebraic thinking becomes more prominent, preparing students for formal algebra in eighth grade. Geometry instruction covers angle relationships, area and circumference of circles, and cross-sections of three-dimensional figures. Science in seventh grade often covers life science in depth: cell structure and function, body systems, genetics and heredity, and evolution. Students design and conduct more sophisticated investigations and analyze data using mathematical reasoning. Social studies typically covers medieval and early modern world history, or continues the American history sequence with colonial through Revolutionary War content. Seventh graders are in the thick of adolescence. They are developing a stronger sense of personal identity, questioning authority, and seeking independence. They are capable of nuanced thinking but may resist tasks they perceive as boring or irrelevant.
