NGSS

The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) represent a fundamental shift in how science is taught in K-8 classrooms. Rather than treating science as a collection of facts to memorize, the NGSS integrates three dimensions: Disciplinary Core Ideas (the content), Science and Engineering Practices (the skills), and Crosscutting Concepts (the connections). Students are expected to engage in scientific practices -- asking questions, planning investigations, analyzing data, constructing explanations, and arguing from evidence -- while learning core content in life science, physical science, Earth and space science, and engineering. The NGSS is organized by grade band (K-2, 3-5, 6-8) with Performance Expectations that describe what students should be able to demonstrate at the end of each band. For example, a 5th grade PE might read: "Develop a model to describe the movement of matter among plants, animals, decomposers, and the environment" (5-LS2-1). This emphasis on performance -- on doing science rather than just knowing science -- aligns naturally with JamWise's active learning approach. JamWise science jams are tagged to specific NGSS Performance Expectations and Disciplinary Core Ideas. A jam about ecosystems and food webs, for instance, addresses LS2.A (Interdependent Relationships in Ecosystems) while its learning games engage students in the practice of constructing explanations from evidence. Teachers can search the library by NGSS code, disciplinary core idea, or topic keyword to find jams that fit their unit.
