Kindergarten

Day
Day is the time when your part of Earth faces the sun and the sky is bright.
Night
Night is the time when your part of Earth faces away from the sun and the sky is dark.
Rain
Rain is water that falls from clouds to the ground.
Season
A season is a time of year. The four seasons are spring, summer, fall, and winter.
Shade
Shade is a dark area where sunlight is blocked by something.
Snow
Snow is tiny white ice crystals that fall from clouds when it is very cold.
Sun
The sun is a star that gives Earth light and warmth.
Temperature
Temperature tells how hot or cold something is.
Weather
Weather is what the air outside is like — sunny, rainy, windy, or snowy.
Wind
Wind is moving air. You can feel wind on your face but you cannot see it.

Season

Soil
Soil is the dirt on the ground where plants grow. It is made of tiny bits of rock and dead plants.
Star
A star is a ball of hot, glowing gas far away in space. The sun is our closest star.
Sunrise
Sunrise is when the sun comes up in the morning and the sky gets bright.
Sunset
Sunset is when the sun goes down in the evening and the sky turns colorful.
Water
Water is a clear liquid that all living things need. It fills oceans, rivers, and lakes.
Weather tools
Weather tools help us measure weather, like a thermometer for temperature, a rain gauge for rain, and a wind sock for wind direction.

Soil
Soil is the top layer of Earth made from tiny pieces of rock, dead plants, and animals. Plants grow in soil.
Stream
A stream is a small, narrow body of moving water that flows over rocks and through fields.
Valley
A valley is a low area of land between two hills or mountains.
Volcano
A volcano is a mountain with an opening where hot melted rock and ash can come out of the earth.
Weathering
Weathering is the slow breaking apart of rocks by wind, water, ice, or plant roots.

Metamorphic rock forms when existing rock is changed by extreme heat and pressure deep underground.

Nonrenewable energy comes from sources that can be used up and take millions of years to form, like coal and oil.

A nonrenewable resource is a natural resource that takes millions of years to form and can run out, like coal, oil, and natural gas.
Renewable energy
Renewable energy comes from sources that will not run out, like sunlight, wind, and water.
Renewable resource
A renewable resource is a natural resource that can be replaced naturally over time, like trees, wind, and sunlight.
Sedimentary rock
Sedimentary rock forms when layers of small pieces of rock, sand, or mud are pressed together over millions of years.
Solar energy
Solar energy is energy from the sun that can be used as heat or converted into electricity.
Topographic map
A topographic map uses lines to show the shape and height of the land, including mountains, valleys, and hills.

Runoff is water from rain or melting snow that flows over the ground into streams, rivers, and lakes.
Telescope
A telescope is a tool that makes distant objects like stars and planets appear closer and larger.
Transpiration
Transpiration is when water moves through a plant and evaporates from its leaves into the air.
Water cycle
The water cycle is the continuous movement of water from Earth's surface to the atmosphere and back again through evaporation, condensation, and precipitation.
Weather map
A weather map shows weather conditions over a large area using symbols for temperature, pressure, and fronts.
