Conservation

Deposition

Deposition is when wind or water drops off sand, soil, or rocks in a new place.

Earthquake

An earthquake is a sudden shaking of the ground caused by movement of rocks deep inside Earth.

Erosion

Erosion is the process of wind, water, or ice wearing away rock and soil and carrying it to a new place.

Fossil

A fossil is the preserved remains, imprint, or trace of a living thing from long ago, found in rock.

Fossil record

The fossil record is all the fossils scientists have found that tell the story of life on Earth over millions of years.

Igneous rock

Igneous rock forms when hot melted rock cools and hardens. Granite and basalt are igneous rocks.

Metamorphic rock

Metamorphic rock forms when existing rock is changed by extreme heat and pressure deep underground.

Nonrenewable energy

Nonrenewable energy comes from sources that can be used up and take millions of years to form, like coal and oil.

Nonrenewable resource

A nonrenewable resource is a natural resource that takes millions of years to form and can run out, like coal, oil, and natural gas.

Renewable energy

Renewable energy comes from sources that will not run out, like sunlight, wind, and water.

Renewable resource

A renewable resource is a natural resource that can be replaced naturally over time, like trees, wind, and sunlight.

Sedimentary rock

Sedimentary rock forms when layers of small pieces of rock, sand, or mud are pressed together over millions of years.

Solar energy

Solar energy is energy from the sun that can be used as heat or converted into electricity.

Topographic map

A topographic map uses lines to show the shape and height of the land, including mountains, valleys, and hills.

Volcano

A volcano is an opening in Earth's surface where hot melted rock called lava erupts.

Weathering

Weathering is the process of breaking rocks into smaller pieces by wind, water, ice, or living things.

Air pressure

Air pressure is the weight of the atmosphere pushing down on Earth's surface.

Anemometer

Barometer

A barometer is a tool that measures air pressure, which helps predict weather changes.

Biosphere

Climate

Climate is the average weather conditions in a region over a long period of time, usually 30 years or more.

Condensation

Condensation is when water vapor cools and changes back into tiny liquid water drops, forming clouds or dew.

Constellation

Deposition

Deposition is when eroded material is dropped in a new location when the wind or water carrying it slows down.

Erosion

Erosion is the movement of weathered rock, soil, and sediment from one place to another by water, wind, ice, or gravity.

Evaporation

Evaporation is when liquid water is heated and changes into water vapor, an invisible gas that rises into the air.

A front is the boundary where two different air masses meet, often causing changes in weather.

Geosphere

The geosphere is all the rock, soil, and minerals that make up the solid part of Earth.

Hydrosphere

The hydrosphere is all the water on Earth — in oceans, lakes, rivers, glaciers, and underground.

Nitrogen

Nitrogen is a gas that makes up about 78% of Earth's atmosphere and is essential for plant growth.

Orbit

An orbit is the curved path an object takes as it travels around another object in space due to gravity.

Oxygen

Oxygen is a gas in the air that animals breathe in and plants release during photosynthesis.

Revolution

Revolution is when one object travels all the way around another object. Earth's revolution around the sun takes one year.

Rotation

Rotation is when an object spins around its own axis. Earth rotates once every 24 hours, causing day and night.

Runoff

Runoff is water from rain or melting snow that flows over the ground into streams, rivers, and lakes.

Telescope

A telescope is a tool that makes distant objects like stars and planets appear closer and larger.

Transpiration

Transpiration is when water moves through a plant and evaporates from its leaves into the air.

Water cycle

The water cycle is the continuous movement of water from Earth's surface to the atmosphere and back again through evaporation, condensation, and precipitation.

Weather map

A weather map shows weather conditions over a large area using symbols for temperature, pressure, and fronts.

A plate boundary is the edge where two tectonic plates meet, where earthquakes and volcanoes often occur.

Plate tectonics is the theory that Earth's outer layer is made of large moving plates that float on the hot mantle below.

Rock cycle

The rock cycle is the continuous process by which rocks are created, changed, broken down, and reformed into different types.

Nonrenewable energy

Nonrenewable energy comes from finite sources that take millions of years to form, such as coal, petroleum, and natural gas.

Plate tectonics

Plate tectonics is the scientific theory explaining how Earth's lithosphere is divided into plates that move, causing earthquakes, volcanoes, and mountain building.

Renewable energy

Renewable energy comes from sources that are naturally replenished, such as solar, wind, hydroelectric, and geothermal power.

Sea-floor spreading

Sea-floor spreading is the process where new oceanic crust forms at mid-ocean ridges as magma rises and pushes plates apart.

Subduction

Subduction is the process where one tectonic plate slides beneath another, often forming deep ocean trenches and volcanic arcs.

Superposition

The law of superposition states that in undisturbed rock layers, the oldest layers are at the bottom and the youngest are at the top.

Tides

Tides are the regular rise and fall of ocean water levels caused mainly by the gravitational pull of the moon.

Troposphere

The troposphere is the lowest layer of Earth's atmosphere where all weather occurs and where we live.

Water table

The water table is the underground level below which the soil and rock are completely saturated with water.
